Airtel
Zambia in collaboration with the Zambia Information Communication Technology
Authority (ZICTA), has launched a nationwide awareness campaign. This
initiative underscores the pressing need to tackle the growing accumulation of
uncollected and improperly disposed e-waste, which poses significant
environmental and health risks to communities.
The
campaign is centered around accessibility and participation, with Airtel
placing e-waste drop-off boxes at all its 61 stores nationwide. These
collection points are open to customers and community members who wish to
safely dispose of unwanted electronics such as mobile phones, radios,
television sets, irons, and batteries. Airtel has pledged to ensure the safe
collection and disposal of these items, setting an example for corporate
environmental responsibility.
Statistics
from the 2022 National ICT Survey reveal the extent of the e-waste challenge in
Zambia. Mobile phones account for 60.7% of total e-waste, while batteries and
radios contribute 38% and 33%, respectively. These figures highlight the urgent
need for proactive measures to manage the growing mountain of discarded
electronics.
ZICTA
Manager of Standards and Electronic Networks, Mr. Elliot Kabalo, has lauded
Airtel’s efforts, stating that the regulator is pleased with the steps being
taken to raise awareness and facilitate the collection of e-waste. Kabalo noted
the importance of collaboration between regulators and corporate entities in
addressing this critical issue.
Martin
Jowi, Airtel’s Supply Chain Management Director, reiterated the company’s
commitment to environmental protection, describing it as a non-negotiable
priority. “Environmental protection is a pressing reality that requires
everyone’s input,” Jowi remarked. He called on individuals and
organizations alike to take responsibility for managing e-waste, which if left
unchecked, could lead to severe ecological consequences.
