The Uganda
Communications Commission (UCC), through its Universal Service and Access Fund
(UCUSAF), distributed over 150 tablets to residents of Kalungu District. In her
opening remarks at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT
& National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde emphasized the importance of
digital inclusion in empowering communities and ensuring equitable access to
online resources, education, and market opportunities.
The tablet
distribution initiative is part of UCUSAF’s ongoing mission to enhance digital
inclusion across Uganda. With over 19,000 devices already distributed to 120
villages nationwide, the program aims to reach even more households, ensuring
that no community is left behind in the digital age.

The tablets
distributed in Kalungu District are equipped with hard covers and solar panels,
ensuring durability and accessibility even in areas without reliable
electricity. Each device comes with a pre-installed SIM card providing six
months of data, enabling users to stay connected and access essential online
resources. This initiative is designed to empower individuals with the tools
they need to pursue education, explore economic opportunities, and improve
their quality of life.
Dr. Zawedde,
who served as the guest of honor at the event, highlighted the transformative
impact of UCUSAF’s initiatives. “Digital inclusion is not just about
providing devices; it’s about creating opportunities for communities to thrive
in the digital age,” she said. “By distributing these tablets, we are
ensuring that every household, regardless of their location, can access the
resources they need to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The Ministry of
ICT & National Guidance, in collaboration with UCUSAF, has made significant
strides in addressing the digital divide across Uganda. The tablet distribution
program is a key component of this effort, targeting underserved communities and
providing them with the tools to participate in the digital economy.
James Beronda,
Director of UCUSAF at the Uganda Communications Commission, also noted the
importance of equitable distribution and community engagement. “We are
working closely with local LC1 chairpersons to ensure that the devices reach
eligible households in a fair and transparent manner,” he said. “Our
goal is to empower communities and create a lasting impact by providing not
just devices, but also the training and support needed to maximize their
benefits.”

During the
event, parents and community members were encouraged to safeguard the tablets
and take full advantage of the opportunities they provide. Training sessions
and community WhatsApp groups have been established to enhance device usage and
learning outcomes, ensuring that recipients can make the most of their new
tools.
The initiative
also aims to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility within the
community. By involving local leaders and providing ongoing support, UCUSAF is
ensuring that the tablets are used effectively to drive education, economic
growth, and social development.
