The American
Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Kenya’s Digital Taskforce has paid a courtesy
visit to the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications,
and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo. The meeting provided an opportunity to
discuss AmCham members’ contributions to Kenya’s digital transformation,
ongoing regulatory developments, and opportunities for industry-government
collaboration to drive the digital economy forward.
The AmCham
Digital Taskforce appraised CS Kabogo on the significant investments made by
its members in Kenya’s digital ecosystem. These investments span various
sectors, including telecommunications, fintech, e-commerce, and digital
infrastructure, and have played a crucial role in accelerating Kenya’s digital
transformation.
The discussions
also focused on the importance of creating an enabling regulatory environment
that supports innovation while addressing emerging challenges in the digital
economy. AmCham members emphasized the need for policies that encourage
investment, foster competition, and promote inclusivity in the digital space.
As part of the
engagement, AmCham formally presented its report, “Trade Agreements Fit for the
Digital Age,” to CS Kabogo. The report highlights the importance of modernizing
trade policies to reflect the evolving digital landscape and ensure that Kenya
remains competitive in the global digital economy.
The report
outlines key recommendations for updating trade agreements to address issues
such as cross-border data flows, digital taxation, e-commerce regulations, and
intellectual property rights in the digital era. By aligning trade policies
with the realities of the digital age, Kenya can unlock new opportunities for
growth, innovation, and job creation.
Hon. William
Kabogo expressed his appreciation for AmCham’s contributions to Kenya’s digital
transformation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a
conducive environment for digital innovation. “The government recognizes the
critical role of the private sector in driving Kenya’s digital economy,” he
said. “We are committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to
address regulatory challenges and create opportunities for growth and
investment.”
He also stressed
the importance of collaboration in achieving Kenya’s digital ambitions. “Partnerships
between the government and the private sector are essential to realizing our
vision of a digitally empowered Kenya,” he added. “We look forward to
continuing this great relationship with AmCham and its members.”
