Tanzania among ITU Member States attending, contesting to be an ITU Council Member - 2023-2026

The World of Information, Communication Technology is meeting in Bucharest, Romania, from 26 September to 14 October during the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (ITU PP22).
Tanzania is represented in the Conference by a delegation of high-profile ICT Industry leaders headed by Honorable Nape Moses Nnauye (MP), Minister of Information, Communication and Information Technology. Hon. Nnauye is expected to present Tanzania Policy Statement on 29 September during the Plenary of the Conference.
Speaking before the Conference, Dr. Jim Yonazi said that Tanzania is participating in the ITU PP22 as a member state, but also for the purpose of enhancing and revitalizing its National Digital Agenda.

“Tanzania aims at placing Tanzania in the field of global ICT development and growing its influence as an IT hub in the Central and Southern Africa region to keep pace with the technological changes taking place every day around the world,” said Dr. Yonazi.
He further said that Tanzania would use this conference to make sure it benefits from the new ITU's strategic plan aimed at bringing universal connectivity and sustainable digital transformation. Also, influence and attract global projects, companies, and development partners in ICT to build capacity and promote youth innovations to use emerging technologies in our country.


The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference brings together the representatives of the 193 Member States of the Union. The Plenipotentiary Conference is the highest policy-making body of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Held every four years, it is the key event at which the ITU Member States decide on the future role of the organization, thereby determining the organization’s ability to influence and affect the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) worldwide.
Welcoming delegates to the 21st Plenipotentiary Conference in Bucharest, ITU Secretary-General said the PP22 would be historical.
“Countries will unite at ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 to set the direction of digital transformation for years to come, for the benefit of our planet and humanity.” ITU Secretary-General said in a statement.
The Conference sets the Union’s general policies, adopts four-year strategic and financial plans and elects the senior management team of the organization, the Member States of the Council, and the members of the Radio Regulations Board.
During this Conference, Tanzania is contesting to be in the ITU Council for the period 2023 to 2026. There are 17 candidates for 13 African positions.
The Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22) will be held in Bucharest, Romania, from Monday, 26 September to Friday, 14 October 2022.
