The
Mobile Money Fraud Prevention initiative in Malawi concluded with members of
the Steering Committee and the Parliamentary Committee on Media and
Communications reaffirming their commitment to addressing the growing challenge
of mobile money fraud.
Chairperson
of the Parliamentary Committee on Media and Communications, Hon. Kingwell
Liphuka, described mobile money fraud as more than a financial crime, noting
that it poses a serious threat to trust and confidence in digital financial
services. He said that while mobile money has played a transformative role in
the economy, fraudulent activities risk undermining these gains and exposing
businesses and consumers to significant harm.

Hon.
Liphuka indicated that the Parliamentary Committee would support intensified
public awareness campaigns across constituencies and pledged to back the review
of relevant legislation aimed at promoting innovative security measures and
strengthening coordinated operations among task force agencies.
Steering
Committee Chairperson and Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority Acting
Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma, commended the task force for its sustained
efforts to mitigate mobile money fraud. He emphasized the importance of
continued collaboration among all stakeholders and urged the team to develop
solutions that stay ahead of evolving fraud tactics.
