The
Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Ghana has formally invited the Speaker of
Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to serve as Special Guest
of Honour at the upcoming Data Protection Conference scheduled for February
26–27.
The
invitation was delivered during a courtesy call led by Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo,
who headed a delegation from the Commission to Parliament. The meeting also
provided an opportunity for the Commission to commend Parliament for its
leadership in advancing compliance with Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act
843).

According
to Dr. Kavaarpuo, the Commission acknowledged Parliament’s registration with
the DPC, as well as the appointment and training of certified data protection
supervisors. He noted that Parliament’s actions demonstrate a strong example of
public sector adherence to data protection regulations.
Discussions
during the meeting also focused on strengthening data protection practices
across the broader public sector. Both parties explored strategies aimed at
ensuring that regulatory compliance evolves into a sustained culture of
responsible data management and governance.
The
conversation further touched on the Open Parliament Initiative, with emphasis
placed on balancing transparency, citizen engagement, and digital innovation
with robust privacy and data governance safeguards.

Dr.
Kavaarpuo expressed appreciation for the Speaker’s reception and reiterated the
Commission’s commitment to promoting responsible data stewardship and enhancing
trust within Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
The
Data Protection Conference is expected to bring together policymakers,
regulators, industry stakeholders, and governance experts to deliberate on
emerging issues in data protection, privacy, and digital trust.
