Zambia and Vodacom Mozambique have officially launched a fibre interconnection
aimed at enhancing cross-border digital infrastructure and improving regional
connectivity.
The
development connects Zambia to all eight of its neighbouring countries through
Bayobab’s terrestrial fibre network, which spans more than 7,000 kilometres.
The interconnection also provides Zambia and surrounding markets with direct
access to the 2Africa subsea cable, expanding international bandwidth capacity.
Officials
said the project is designed to strengthen network resilience, increase
capacity, and support the delivery of faster and more reliable digital services
across the region. The initiative reflects growing collaboration between
telecommunications operators to address rising demand for data, digital
services, and regional integration.

The
launch event was attended by Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix
Mutati, and Mozambique’s Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation,
Américo Muchanga. Representatives from regulatory authorities of both countries
were also present, underscoring the role of policy and regulatory support in
enabling cross-border infrastructure investments.
Industry
stakeholders noted that such interconnection projects play a critical role in
facilitating trade, financial inclusion, and digital innovation by improving
the efficiency and reliability of regional communications networks.
Bayobab,
MTN Group’s digital infrastructure subsidiary, continues to expand its fibre
footprint across Africa as part of broader efforts to support the continent’s
digital transformation agenda.
