The
Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology in Eswatini has launched
the Eswatini Literacy Foundation, marking a significant step toward
strengthening literacy and digital inclusion as part of the country’s national
development agenda.
Speaking
at the launch, Principal Secretary Prince Mshishimba emphasized the critical
role of literacy as a foundational pillar for socio-economic progress, noting
that modern literacy must extend beyond basic reading and writing to include
the ability to navigate and participate effectively in a digital society.

He
stated that while Eswatini is making progress toward a more digitally enabled
future, ensuring inclusive access to literacy remains essential, particularly
for underserved groups such as rural communities, small business operators, and
senior citizens.
The
Principal Secretary highlighted that traditional literacy continues to underpin
all forms of education and must serve as the base upon which digital
competencies are developed. He added that strengthening both forms of literacy
is necessary to build a workforce capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly
evolving digital economy.

He
further noted that digital literacy plays a key role in driving employment and
entrepreneurship, supporting economic empowerment for small and medium
enterprises, and improving access to public services, thereby enhancing social
inclusion.
According
to the Ministry, the establishment of the Eswatini Literacy Foundation
represents the beginning of a broader national effort to equip citizens with
the skills required to participate meaningfully in the modern economy and to
ensure that the benefits of digital transformation are shared across all
segments of society.
