The
African Agribusiness Incubators Network (AAIN) and the Inter-University Council
for East Africa (IUCEA) have held a strategic meeting aimed at operationalising
their existing Memorandum of Understanding focused on strengthening
agribusiness innovation and incubation systems across East Africa.
The
engagement focused on practical steps to deepen collaboration between
universities and incubation ecosystems to drive entrepreneurship, innovation,
and job creation in the agribusiness sector.

Central
to the discussions was the shared view that universities must evolve beyond
traditional knowledge generation to become active drivers of enterprise
development and employment creation.
The
partnership prioritises strengthening university-based incubation systems,
supporting student and faculty-led startups, enhancing research and
commercialization efforts, building capacity in business incubation management,
and creating structured pathways for youth into sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking
during the meeting, the Acting Executive Secretary of IUCEA, Prof. Idris Rai
emphasized the need for universities to become engines of innovation and
enterprise, while Deputy CEO for AAIN, Richard Ekodeu noted that the
collaboration aims to create structured systems that enable innovation to scale
into meaningful job creation.
The
initiative is expected to strengthen regional efforts to build a more
integrated ecosystem where academia, innovation, and enterprise converge to
unlock Africa’s agribusiness potential.
