MTN
Uganda has partnered with key stakeholders to launch the e-Xpress electric
buses during National Science Week, marking a significant step toward
modernising public transport through digital innovation and sustainability.
The
initiative introduces electric buses designed to provide a more efficient and
environmentally friendly commuting option, while integrating digital solutions
to enhance the passenger experience. MTN Uganda has joined the project as the
official payment partner through its MTN MoMo service, enabling cashless fare
payments for commuters.
In
addition to digital payments, the company has deployed onboard WiFi
connectivity across the buses, allowing passengers to remain connected and
productive during their journeys. The move is aimed at transforming daily
commutes into more efficient and digitally enabled experiences.
Speaking
at the launch, Paul J Luyima, Senior Manager for Government and Large
Enterprise at MTN Uganda, said the company’s role is to support the broader
e-bus ecosystem through connectivity and digital infrastructure. He noted that
reliable onboard internet access will enable commuters to carry out tasks such
as sending reports and completing work while in transit.
The
partnership underscores MTN Uganda’s strategy to leverage technology in
improving urban mobility, with a focus on integrating connectivity, digital
payments, and sustainable transport solutions. Stakeholders at the event
highlighted that such initiatives are critical in building smarter cities and
enhancing the quality of everyday life.
The
e-Xpress project forms part of broader efforts to promote innovation-driven
transport systems in Uganda, combining clean energy solutions with digital
platforms to support economic productivity and environmental sustainability.
