Ethio Telecom has engaged
architects, civil engineers, real estate professionals and students on the
importance of fibre-ready buildings as Ethiopia expands high-speed connectivity
and advances its digital transformation agenda.
The engagement took place
during a Home Connectivity and FTTH Workshop hosted by Ethio telecom and The
Urban Center, bringing together industry experts and professionals to examine
how Fibre to the Home (FTTH) and Fibre to the Room (FTTR) technologies can be
integrated into modern buildings.
Tewodros Hailemeskel, Chief
Fixed Network Officer at Ethio telecom, and Maheder Gebremedhin, Director of
The Urban Center, shared insights on the role of fixed connectivity
infrastructure in modern building development.
Mersea Hailemariam, Fixed
Network Planning and Engineering Director at Ethio telecom, also participated
in discussions on the opportunities and challenges associated with deploying
fibre infrastructure in residential and commercial properties.
The workshop highlighted the
need to incorporate fibre connectivity into building designs at the planning
and construction stages to address growing demand for reliable high-speed
internet.
Participants examined how
fibre-ready buildings can help overcome Wi-Fi capacity limitations, optimise
network infrastructure and reduce operations and maintenance costs while
enabling gigabit connectivity across individual rooms.
FTTH connects fibre directly
to homes and buildings, while FTTR extends fibre connectivity within buildings
to individual rooms, providing a more consistent and high-capacity connection
than relying solely on conventional Wi-Fi infrastructure.
Ethio telecom also presented
connectivity solutions designed to maintain services during power outages,
alongside updates on its teleStream platform and new fixed internet services.
