South Africa announces winners of 2026 Women in Science Awards

South Africa has announced the winners of the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards, recognising leading female researchers and innovators for their contributions to science, technology and societal development.

The awards, organised under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, celebrate women making significant contributions across research, innovation and public engagement with science.

In the Humanities and Social Sciences category, Prof. Tanusha Raniga and Prof. Xanthe Hunt emerged as winners.

The Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences category recognised Prof. Marietjie Venter and Prof. Tricia Naicker for their contributions to scientific research.

In the Public Engagement with Science category, Assoc. Prof. Lynn Hendricks and Dr Hafsa Essop were recognised for their work in connecting scientific knowledge with wider society.

The Innovation for Impact: Women Leading Change category honoured Prof. Mothiba Tebogo and Assoc. Prof. Sabrina Kumschick for their contributions to innovation and efforts to translate research into meaningful impact.

The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation said the awardees are helping to advance research, innovation and scientific development in South Africa while inspiring the next generation of women in science.

The recognition comes as South Africa continues to promote greater participation of women in science, technology and innovation and strengthen the contribution of research and innovation to national development.
