The Chief Executive Officer
of Suku Technologies and Chair of the Association of Ghana Industries, Accra, Tsonam
Akpeloo has been sworn in as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Applied
Technology Institute (ATI) in East Legon.
The swearing-in ceremony was
held under the theme, “Strengthening Governance for Quality Technical and
Vocational Education,” marking a new chapter for the institution. The Oath of
Office and Oath of Secrecy were administered by Her Worship Rhoda K. Donkor,
Circuit Court Judge.
Akpeloo said the appointment
comes at an important time for skills development and Ghana’s industrial
growth, noting that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has
a critical role to play in bridging the gap between education and industry and
preparing young people for a changing world of work.
The Applied Technology
Institute offers training in areas including automotive technology, heavy-duty
diesel, electrical and electronics, computer hardware and software, and
photovoltaic solar technology. The institution is also preparing to expand into
electric vehicle systems.
ATI was the first technical
institution in Ghana to formally offer solar technology as a programme, placing
it in a strong position to contribute to the country’s growing demand for
technical skills in emerging and future industries.
As a Board, members have
been tasked with providing strategic guidance to revamp and reposition ATI as a
world-class centre for technical and vocational education. The Board’s focus
will include strengthening governance and quality assurance, building industry
partnerships, improving infrastructure, promoting innovation and enhancing
graduate employability.
Akpeloo said the ultimate
measure of the institution’s success would be the competence of the young
people it prepares for employment, entrepreneurship and future industries.
He said the Board has an
opportunity to help equip a generation with the skills not only to participate
in the future of work but also to help shape it.
Akpeloo congratulated his
fellow members of the Governing Board and expressed confidence that through
strengthened leadership and partnerships, the Institute would be positioned for
greater impact.
