Eswatini’s Governor of the
Central Bank, Dr Phil Mnisi, has been appointed Chairman of the Alliance for
Financial Inclusion’s (AFI) African Financial Inclusion Policy Initiative
(AfPI), giving the country a greater role in shaping financial inclusion policy
and regional cooperation across Africa.
The appointment was
announced during the AFI Global Policy Forum in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea,
where Eswatini marked what the country described as another significant
achievement on the global financial policy stage.
As Chair of AfPI, Governor
Mnisi will steer financial inclusion policy discussions across AFI’s African
member network and contribute to setting priorities aimed at expanding access
to financial services across the continent.
The African initiative forms
part of AFI’s broader global network, which brings together participants from
approximately 72 countries to share policy experiences and advance financial
inclusion.
The chairmanship provides
Eswatini with an important platform to contribute to continental discussions on
financial inclusion while strengthening cooperation among African financial
authorities.
Following his appointment,
Mnisi recognised the work of previous AfPI leadership and commended Governor Dr
Johnson Pandit Asiama and Second Deputy Governor Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu,
with the support of Dr Alfred Hannig and the AFI team, for their commitment and
stewardship of the initiative over the past year.
“I take this opportunity to
recognise and commend Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama and Second Deputy
Governor Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, with the support of Dr. Alfred Hannig and
the AFI team, for their commitment and stewardship of AfPI over the past year,”
Mnisi said.
His appointment is expected
to strengthen Eswatini’s participation in regional and global financial
inclusion policy discussions while providing an opportunity to promote
approaches that support broader access to financial services and inclusive
economic participation across Africa.
