Mobile Money Zambia CEO Komba Malukutila has highlighted the need for Africa’s fintech sector to move beyond expanding access to digital financial services and focus on ensuring customers can reliably use those services when and where they need them.

Malukutila made the remarks during the “Africa’s Velocity Index” panel at the MTN Group Fintech Summit 2026, where fintech leaders from Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia and Cameroon examined the different stages of mobile money development across their markets and priorities for the sector’s next phase.

The discussion focused on how African markets can deepen the use of mobile financial services and deliver more meaningful financial outcomes for customers rather than relying solely on subscriber and transaction growth.

Malukutila brought particular attention to customer experience, stressing that users ultimately care about whether digital financial services are accessible and whether sufficient liquidity is available when they need it.

The panel also examined opportunities to encourage saving and investment through digital platforms, improve agent liquidity and use technology to identify gaps in service delivery.

Participants noted that while mobile money has significantly expanded financial access across Africa, greater adoption and usage will require stronger and more reliable ecosystems capable of responding to everyday financial needs.

Malukutila’s contribution placed customer accessibility and liquidity at the centre of the discussion, highlighting the importance of ensuring that the infrastructure supporting digital finance can keep pace with growing demand.

The panel brought together different market experiences but identified a common ambition to build digital financial ecosystems that extend beyond basic access and deliver greater value to customers in their everyday financial lives.
