The Gabonese Agency for
Space Studies and Observations (AGEOS) has reaffirmed its commitment to using
space technologies to strengthen maritime surveillance, protect ocean resources
and support Gabon’s maritime sovereignty.
AGEOS participated in a
Space4Ocean Alliance panel during the International Space Summit in Paris, held
on September 9 and 10, 2026, where members of the alliance discussed the role
of space technology in the sustainable management and protection of oceans and
coastal areas.
The panel focused on
innovation, Earth observation, space security and the sustainability of space
activities, providing signatories with an opportunity to share experiences and
strengthen cooperation around the use of space-based technologies for maritime
challenges.
The Space4Ocean Alliance,
initiated by France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), brings together
space and maritime stakeholders to develop operational services combining
satellite data, in-situ observations and advanced technological tools.
For Gabon, the cooperation
addresses a range of maritime challenges, including environmental protection
and climate change adaptation, maritime security and the fight against piracy,
as well as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
AGEOS has developed a
national territorial surveillance service incorporating multiple technological
capabilities, including a dedicated maritime surveillance component that uses
space-based observation to improve knowledge and monitoring of Gabonese maritime
areas.
