Senegal has taken a major
step towards expanding digital radio broadcasting following the transfer of its
Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting (DAB+) infrastructure to TDS SA at the end of
a pilot phase led by the telecommunications and postal regulator.
The transfer took place on
September 10, 2026, with the Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications et
des Postes (ARTP) formally handing over the infrastructure to TDS SA after the
completion of the pilot programme.
ARTP Director General
Dahirou Thiam said the pilot phase, developed through long-term technical work,
had helped stabilise the infrastructure and was accompanied by a maintenance
contract to support its continued operation.
The transition to DAB+ is
expected to improve radio broadcasting in Senegal by providing better sound
quality, expanding coverage and allowing for a wider and more diverse range of
radio programmes.
The digital broadcasting
infrastructure will also enable more efficient use of frequency resources
through multiplexing, allowing several radio services to share digital
transmission capacity.
The handover marks the
beginning of a new phase for Senegal’s digital radio ecosystem as the country
moves from pilot deployment towards broader operational use of DAB+ technology.
