South Africa has launched
the Women in Green Hydrogen South African Chapter to strengthen national
coordination and promote greater participation of women in the country’s green
hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) sectors.
The chapter was launched
during the 2026 Women in Green Hydrogen luncheon in Cape Town, held ahead of
the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit at the Century City Conference Centre. The
event was held under the theme, “Global Partnerships, Local Impact: The Strategic
Importance of International Collaboration in Advancing Women in South Africa’s
Green Hydrogen and Power-to-X Economy.”
Deputy Minister of Science,
Technology and Innovation Dr Nomalungelo Gina addressed the gathering, which
was also attended by Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho
Ramokgopa.
The discussions focused on
how international collaboration can unlock opportunities for women through
knowledge exchange, investment, capacity building and strategic partnerships as
South Africa develops its green hydrogen and PtX economy.
The new South African
chapter is intended to foster collaboration among stakeholders while supporting
women as leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs in the emerging sectors.
Dr Gina said the discussions
were particularly significant as they build on the activities and theme of
Women’s Month, providing a basis for examining how global partnerships can
translate into local impact and create greater opportunities for women in South
Africa’s green hydrogen and PtX sectors.
Stakeholders have been
engaged in discussions on advancing the meaningful participation of women in
the green hydrogen sector since 2022, inspired by the International Women in
Green Hydrogen Framework and the establishment of its African Chapter.
