The Government of Kenya has
launched the Phase II rollout of the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) devices
in Nairobi County, marking another step towards integrating technology into
teaching and learning in public Junior Schools.
The rollout was launched at
Lenana Primary School by Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy
Eng. John Tanui, alongside Dagoretti South MP and Chairperson of the National
Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation, Hon. John
Kiarie, and ICT Authority CEO Jessy Maruti.
Implemented by the ICT
Authority under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), the
programme is deploying teacher laptops and interactive smart boards to 10,382
public Junior Schools across Kenya’s 47 counties.
In Nairobi County, devices
have been delivered to all 98 targeted schools, while installation, inspection
and acceptance have been completed in 91 schools, representing 92.9 per cent
completion.
The programme forms part of
the government’s broader efforts to integrate digital technology into
classrooms and strengthen the use of technology in public Junior Schools.
The device rollout is being
complemented by teacher training aimed at strengthening digital skills and
supporting the meaningful integration of technology into classroom instruction.
The training and deployment
of digital learning equipment are intended to help teachers make effective use
of technology while preparing learners for opportunities in an increasingly
digital economy.
