Kenya and Anthropic have
entered a Joint Agreement to deepen collaboration on the responsible use of
artificial intelligence at national scale, with a focus on skills, research,
public-sector applications, AI safety and evaluation, education and health.
Kenya’s Special Envoy on
Technology, Ambassador Philip Thigo, said the agreement follows months of
co-creation between Kenya and Anthropic and establishes a framework for
collaboration across several areas of national priority.
The partnership is built
around co-creating with Kenyan institutions, building local capability, testing
what works and scaling solutions responsibly under Kenyan law.
Thigo said the collaboration
is also intended to ensure that frontier AI is shaped around Kenya’s
institutions, languages, development priorities and the public interest.
The agreement will further
strengthen Kenya’s capacity to participate in the evaluation and governance of
emerging AI technologies.
Areas covered by the
framework include skills development, research, public-sector applications, AI
safety and evaluation, education and health, alongside other national
priorities.
Thigo said the approach
places emphasis on developing AI capabilities locally while ensuring that
applications are tested and scaled in a manner consistent with Kenyan law.
The partnership also seeks
to strengthen Kenya’s ability to engage in the evaluation and governance of
frontier AI systems as the technologies continue to advance.
Thigo expressed appreciation
to Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’Oei, Elizabeth Kelly, Ambassador Courtney O’Donnell
and the teams on both sides who worked over the past months to bring the
partnership to its current stage.
