The Director of
Documentation and Information at the National Geological Survey of Senegal
(SGNS), Ms. Fatoumata Dramé has trained participants in science communication
as part of the PanAfGeo+ programme sessions held in Ouarzazate, Morocco.
Dramé, a specialist in
public and social communication, led several sessions on September 26 and 27,
2026, focused on communication techniques applied to geosciences.
The sessions aimed to equip
participants with practical tools to transform scientific and technical
information into clear, accessible, useful and action-oriented messages.
The training covered the
fundamentals of science communication, the transition from information to
action using the Data → Meaning → Decision → Action approach, and the
development of effective messages adapted to different audiences.
Participants also explored
the formulation of calls to action, the use of the SELL method to structure
credible, relevant and mobilizing messages, and the writing of press releases
applied to geosciences.
Through case studies,
practical exercises and group work, participants worked on subjects including
geological hazards, geoconservation, hydrogeology and mineral resources.
The training sought to help
participants communicate complex scientific content more effectively to
decision-makers, the media, communities and the general public.
The SGNS said the
contribution demonstrated the importance of combining geoscientific expertise
with communication skills to better value knowledge produced and strengthen its
usefulness to society.
Better communication of
geosciences means giving them more visibility, but above all more impact on
decisions and populations.
