The International
Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
have published a joint paper examining how the existing international standards
system can support the safe, secure and accountable development of frontier
artificial intelligence (AI).
Developed as part of the
World Standards Cooperation, the paper explores the growing need for
internationally recognised approaches to AI safety, security, transparency and
accountability as frontier AI capabilities continue to advance.
The publication highlights
existing foundations within the international standards system and identifies
opportunities to accelerate global cooperation in addressing emerging AI risks.
Its areas of focus include
AI risk assessment, testing and evaluation, red teaming, incident reporting, as
well as the trust and identity of autonomous AI agents.
According to the ITU, the
rapid advancement of frontier AI capabilities makes internationally recognised
approaches to these issues increasingly urgent.
The joint initiative
reflects efforts by international standards organisations to strengthen
cooperation and support the development of common approaches to AI governance,
helping ensure that emerging technologies are developed and deployed with
appropriate safeguards.
