Kenya's Electric bus pioneer, BasiGo has announced the introduction of its newest electric bus, the E9 Kubwa, which is designed to meet the needs of Nairobi's public transport operators.

The 9-meter, 100% electric bus has an increased capacity for 36 seated passengers and 18 standing passengers and is a major step towards decarbonizing public transport in Nairobi.

BasiGo in a statement on its social media Linkedin platform said “The bus is cleaner, preferred by passengers, and more profitable for bus operators. The first two E9 Kubwa buses are ready in pilot operation with public transport operators in Nairobi, and whiles on the road reduce diesel consumption by approximately 20,000 litres per year and cut carbon emission by 50 tonnes annually thanks to Kenya’s 90% renewable electricity.”

“The E9 Kubwa is the electric bus designed for Kenya. With each electric bus on the road, we position Kenya as a global leader in sustainable public transport, creating a greener, more livable planet for all,” it emphasised.

Founded in 2021, BasiGo has led the introduction of electric buses in Nairobi’s public transport fleet.  BasiGo has sold 19 Electric Buses to public transport operators in Nairobi and has secured reservations for over 100 additional buses. BasiGo electric buses have driven over 460,000 kilometres and carried over 580,000 passengers. BasiGo has also deployed Kenya's first DC fast charging stations for electric buses.

BasiGo offers electric buses to private bus operators through a mileage-based leasing model called Pay-As-You-Drive, which makes electric buses affordable for private bus operators to purchase and use.
