Kenya launches Jitume Digital Lab at Kakamega Polytechnic to empower youth with digital skills

The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, and the Digital Economy, has joined the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi E.G.H., to officially unveil the Jitume Program Digital Lab at Kakamega Polytechnic.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by an array of distinguished leaders, including Kakamega County Governor H.E. FCPA Fernandes Barasa OGW, PS for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, MBS, PS for the State Department of Broadcasting Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, PS for the State Department of Higher Education Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, and Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri, OGW.

The Jitume Digital Lab is an innovative initiative designed to provide young people with hands-on training in digital technologies. By bridging the digital skills gap, the program aims to enable Kenya’s youth to seize opportunities in a rapidly digitizing global economy. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Ndung’u highlighted the importance of digital inclusion and skills development as critical drivers of sustainable economic growth.

"The Jitume Program is not just about technology; it is about empowering our youth to become creators of opportunities. Through this initiative, we aim to unlock the potential of our young people, enabling them to access jobs, create businesses, and contribute meaningfully to the digital economy," Dr. Ndung’u stated.

Prime Cabinet Secretary H.E. Musalia Mudavadi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for youth to thrive. "The launch of the Jitume Digital Lab symbolizes our dedication to equipping young Kenyans with the skills they need to succeed in the modern workforce. This initiative aligns with our broader vision of positioning Kenya as a hub for innovation and digital excellence," he remarked.

The Jitume Lab at Kakamega Polytechnic will serve as a hub for training in critical areas such as software development, digital marketing, and data analytics. It will also provide access to resources and mentorship opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
