The
Director-General of the Regional
African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM), Timothy Adi Ashong has extended his
heartfelt congratulations to Dr.
Tidiane Ouattara and his team on their official assumption of
leadership at the African Space Agency
(AfSA). In a statement, Mr. Ashong noted that “This momentous
occasion marks the beginning of a new era in Africa’s space aspirations, and
RASCOM stands proud alongside Dr. Ouattara and his team as they lead the
African continent toward greater strides in space exploration and technological
advancement.”
On January 9, 2025, Dr. Ouattara,
accompanied by Professor Sherif Sedky,
President of the Egyptian Space Agency
(EgSA), visited Egypt to officially assume his new role. They
met with Dr. Badr Abdelatty,
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, who warmly welcomed Dr.
Ouattara and reaffirmed Egypt’s full and unconditional support for the African
Space Agency’s mission.
The
visit symbolized a strengthening of ties between the African Space Agency and the Egyptian Space Agency, with Minister
Abdelatty emphasizing Egypt’s pivotal role in the space sector. He commended
the Egyptian Space Agency's leadership of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS),
which successfully produced a consensus report at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
in October/November 2024.
Dr. Ouattara, accompanied by Professor Sherif Sedky, President of the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), visited Egypt to officially assume his new role.
“At
RASCOM, we are excited
about the leadership that Dr. Ouattara
brings to the African Space Agency. His appointment signifies a major milestone
for Africa’s space program, and we are optimistic about the direction that his
leadership will take the agency in fostering unity and collaboration across the
continent,” he said.
“We
would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Professor Sherif Sedky, President of
the Egyptian Space Agency, and the Egyptian
government for their unwavering support of the African Space
Agency. Egypt’s continued backing of Africa’s space initiatives, coupled with
its leadership in the global space community, will undoubtedly play a crucial
role in the success of the African Space Agency’s mission,’’ he added.
The
statement also acknowledged that the partnership between the African Space Agency and Egypt sets a solid foundation for
the continent’s space future, and reiterates RASCOM commitment to contributing to the realization of
Africa’s space potential
and work in unity to drive progress toward the achievement of Agenda 2063.
