The President of the African Space Agency (AfSA), Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, has reiterated the pivotal role of the private sector in driving the socioeconomic development of the African continent. Speaking passionately about the intersection of space technology and economic growth, Dr. Ouattara highlighted the African Space Policy and Strategy as a foundational framework for enabling private-sector participation in Africa's development journey.

Dr. Ouattara stressed the urgency of engaging the private sector to harness its potential for accelerating economic progress. “It is clear for us, the African Space Agency, that we must quickly, I say quickly, take action to enable the private sector to effectively and efficiently contribute to the economic growth of the continent,” he stated.

This focus on private-sector inclusion has led to the establishment of the African Space Solutions Market, a groundbreaking initiative designed to foster collaboration and innovation. The event, scheduled to take place in Abidjan from May 6th to 8th, 2025, will serve as a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and business development. Dr. Ouattara described it as a unique opportunity for stakeholders from Africa and around the globe to convene, exchange ideas, and shape the future of Africa’s space industry.

“Space is a business matter,” Dr. Ouattara declared. He underscored that the African Space Solutions Market would be the first of its kind on the continent, bringing together international partners to discuss opportunities and challenges in the space business. He encouraged African nations and entrepreneurs to seize this moment to secure their stake in the global space economy, which he views as a promising niche for the continent.

Beyond economic benefits, Dr. Ouattara also pointed to the critical role of space technology in enhancing Africa's security. From securing territorial boundaries on land to monitoring activities in oceans, space systems are integral to ensuring stability and protecting resources. He cited the ongoing need to address continental challenges with innovative solutions powered by space technology.

“Space is the key pillar for the socioeconomic development of the continent. Space is also the key pillar of African security,” he stated, urging stakeholders to rally around the potential of space as a driver of progress and safety for the continent.

The African Space Solutions Market reflects AfSA’s commitment to bridging the gap between public initiatives and private enterprise, positioning space technology as a cornerstone of Africa’s transformation. As the continent embraces this opportunity, it sets the stage for fostering innovation, creating jobs, and driving sustainable development through space-based solutions.
