The Foundation for Space Development Africa is participating in the Frontier Development Lab (FDL) Big Think, an interdisciplinary workshop aimed at accelerating the development of AI solutions tailored to African contexts. The event brings together AI researchers, scientists, and African partner organisations to create "ready-to-pilot" projects using foundation models.

Partners for the workshop include the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences, South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRF/SARAO), the South African National Space Agency, DARA – Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy, the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, Trillium Technologies, and commercial AI partners including Google Cloud and NVIDIA.

The workshop is focused on two main themes: novel applications, which involve developing practical agentic tools using geospatial foundation models, and scientific discovery, which leverages AI-powered analysts to produce new science outcomes.

Ideas generated during the Big Think are distilled into one-page concept notes, forming the foundation for the FDL Foundations Autumn 2026 sprint. Organisers acknowledged Mike Heyns for his leadership and guidance in coordinating the event.
