Kenya has taken a major step in environmental governance with the launch of the Kenya Online Continuous Emission Monitoring System (KOCEMS), the country’s first national-scale digital platform for monitoring industrial emissions in real time.

The initiative was inaugurated by Hon. Deborah Barasa, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change & Forestry, alongside Dr. Mamo B. Mamo, Director General of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and Rohit Khattar, Founder of United Platform Solutions Global.

KOCEMS is designed to provide real-time environmental data from industries and infrastructure across Kenya, enabling data-driven regulation, greater transparency, and improved compliance. The platform is part of the larger Africa Online Continuous Emission Monitoring System (AOCEMS) initiative, which aims to establish a continent-wide environmental monitoring network.

Officials highlighted that the system strengthens Kenya’s capacity to enforce climate commitments while promoting industrial accountability and cleaner operations. The launch positions Kenya as a leader in leveraging technology for environmental governance in East Africa.
