The International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched the 2026 edition of its ICT
Development Index (IDI), highlighting continued global progress toward
universal and meaningful connectivity while underscoring persistent digital
disparities that require targeted policy action.
Announcing the release, the
Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT), Cosmas Luckyson
Zavazava, said the latest findings show that countries across all regions and
income groups are making steady advances in expanding digital access and
strengthening connectivity.
According to the report, key
areas of progress include the continued expansion of connectivity, wider
network coverage, improved affordability of digital services, and sustained
growth in internet usage worldwide.
Despite these positive
trends, the report notes that significant gaps remain between and within
countries, indicating that further investment and policy interventions are
needed to achieve inclusive digital development.
Zavazava emphasized that
opportunities for improvement exist across all income groups, particularly in
strengthening statistical reporting and data collection to better inform
evidence-based policymaking.
The ICT Development Index
serves as a key global benchmark for measuring countries' progress in digital
development and provides policymakers, regulators, development partners, and
industry stakeholders with insights into where progress is being made, where
challenges persist, and where additional support is most needed.
The 2026 edition of the IDI
is expected to support governments and international partners in shaping
policies and investments aimed at accelerating universal, affordable, and
meaningful connectivity in line with global digital development goals.
