The Department of Science,
Technology and Innovation has officially launched South Africa’s first National
Science Month, marking a new national initiative aimed at strengthening public
engagement with science, technology and innovation.
The launch was led by Deputy
Minister Dr Nomalungelo Gina on 4 July at the Vaal University of Technology
Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park. The initiative will run
throughout July under the theme “Science, Technology, and Innovation are for everyone.”
The month-long programme is
designed to bring science closer to communities by moving beyond traditional
laboratory and academic settings into public spaces where citizens can directly
engage with scientific knowledge and innovation.
According to the Department,
the initiative seeks to spark curiosity among young people, promote scientific
literacy and highlight the role of science in addressing real-world challenges
and supporting national development.
Organisers say National
Science Month will also focus on demystifying complex scientific concepts,
making them more accessible to the general public and encouraging broader
participation in science-related activities across all age groups.
Throughout the month,
various programmes and activities will showcase developments in fields such as
artificial intelligence, forensic science and local research innovations, with
an emphasis on demonstrating how science contributes to solving everyday problems
and improving quality of life.
The initiative is expected
to strengthen collaboration between researchers, educational institutions,
industry and communities while inspiring the next generation of scientists,
engineers and innovators in South Africa.
