United Nations
Secretary-General, António Guterres has called for stronger human oversight and
effective governance of artificial intelligence, warning that the rapid pace of
AI development is outstripping the ability of existing institutions to regulate
the technology.
Speaking at the Global
Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, Guterres stressed that artificial
intelligence must be developed within robust governance frameworks to ensure it
serves the interests of humanity while minimizing potential risks.
He cautioned that without
effective oversight, AI could deepen existing inequalities and erode public
trust, underscoring the need for international cooperation to establish
responsible governance mechanisms.
The Secretary-General
emphasized that innovation should be accompanied by appropriate safeguards,
noting that technological progress must be guided by policies that promote
safety, fairness and accountability.
The Global Dialogue on AI
Governance has brought together government leaders, policymakers, international
organizations, industry representatives and other stakeholders to discuss
approaches to the responsible development and governance of artificial intelligence.
Discussions at the forum are
focusing on key issues including global AI governance frameworks, ethical
deployment of AI, digital inclusion, capacity building, international
cooperation and ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are
shared equitably across countries.
