Kenya’s Special Envoy on
Technology, Philip Thigo, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing inclusive
global artificial intelligence governance, highlighting the importance of
international cooperation as AI continues to reshape societies and economies.
Thigo made the remarks after
reconnecting with members of the United Nations High-Level Advisory Body on
Artificial Intelligence, the group established under the leadership of the United
Nations Secretary-General to help develop global approaches to AI governance.
He noted that the advisory
body's work contributed to the establishment of the Global Dialogue on AI
Governance and the Independent Scientific Panel on AI, describing both
initiatives as important milestones in strengthening international
collaboration on the responsible development and use of artificial
intelligence.
Thigo said he was proud of
the progress made through the advisory body's work and expressed appreciation
for the opportunity to continue supporting the United Nations in promoting an
inclusive approach to AI governance.
He stressed that as
artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into economies and
everyday life, governments and international stakeholders must strengthen
governance frameworks that address the technology’s potential risks while
ensuring its benefits are shared broadly to advance sustainable development and
improve lives.
According to Thigo, the next
phase of global AI governance will require moving from dialogue to
implementation through evidence-based policymaking, international cooperation
and inclusive participation that reflects the perspectives and aspirations of
all countries.
