South Africa has reaffirmed
its commitment to deeper collaboration within BRICS to advance science,
technology and innovation in support of resilience, sustainable development and
shared prosperity.
Deputy Minister of Science,
Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, made the commitment while
addressing the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting in
Chennai, India.
Dr Gina welcomed the
unanimous adoption of the Chennai Declaration, which commits BRICS countries to
strengthening cooperation and establishing a future-ready framework for
scientific and technological advancement.
South Africa also welcomed
progress towards the operationalisation of the BRICS Global Research Advanced
Infrastructure Network (BRICS GRAIN) and the proposed BRICS Science and
Research Repository.
The initiatives are expected
to improve access to research infrastructure, facilitate knowledge exchange and
promote collaborative research among BRICS member states.
The Department of Science,
Technology and Innovation said it remains committed to working with BRICS
partners to translate the commitments into practical programmes that advance
scientific excellence, emerging technologies, innovation and inclusive development.
