The Bank of Ghana has
inaugurated the Virtual Assets Coordinating Committee (VACC) to coordinate the
implementation of Ghana’s Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154),
and strengthen oversight of the country’s growing virtual asset ecosystem.
The committee was
inaugurated, bringing together the Bank of Ghana, the Securities and Exchange
Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Cyber Security Authority and the
Financial Intelligence Centre.
The VACC is mandated to
enhance regulatory coordination, strengthen information sharing and support a
collective response to emerging risks associated with virtual assets and
digital finance.
Speaking at the
inauguration, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, stressed
the need for a proactive and coordinated regulatory approach as Ghana’s digital
finance landscape continues to evolve.
“Effective coordination,
timely information sharing, and a shared commitment to safeguarding the
integrity of our financial system will be essential if we are to build a
virtual asset ecosystem that is safe, well-regulated, and supportive of
innovation and inclusion,” Dr Asiama said.
The establishment of the
committee marks a transition from the passage of legislation to its coordinated
implementation, bringing key financial, cybersecurity, intelligence and
regulatory institutions together under a common framework.
The committee is expected to
play a central role in strengthening consumer protection, financial stability
and cybersecurity while supporting the responsible development of Ghana’s
virtual asset sector.
