Kenya detected approximately
2.6 billion cyber threat events between July and September 2026, representing a
14.45 per cent increase from the previous quarter, as the Communications
Authority of Kenya (CA) called for stronger cybersecurity capacity and regional
collaboration to address emerging cyber threats across Africa.
The figures were disclosed
by CA Director General, Mr. David Mugonyi, at the 7th Africa Cyber Defence
Forum 2026, which the Authority is hosting in partnership with the Africa Cyber
Defence Forum (ACDF) in Nairobi.
During the same period, the
Authority issued over 20 million cybersecurity advisories to support awareness
and strengthen preparedness.
Held under the theme
“Africa’s Cyber Sovereignty: From Vision to Action in a Fragmented World,” the
Forum brings together cybersecurity experts, policymakers, regulators, industry
players and researchers to exchange knowledge, build technical capacity and
strengthen collective responses to emerging cyber threats.
Speaking at the Forum,
Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Hon.
William Kabogo, emphasised that cyber sovereignty is not about isolation, but
empowering Africa to secure its critical systems, develop local expertise,
safeguard its data and build strategic partnerships.
He highlighted the need for
sustained investment in cybersecurity skills, resilient infrastructure,
institutional capabilities and stronger regional cooperation.
Mr. Mugonyi underscored the
importance of continuous capacity building, threat intelligence sharing and
coordinated incident response in protecting Africa’s growing digital ecosystem.
He called on governments,
regulators, academia, industry and other stakeholders to strengthen technical
expertise, share intelligence and establish practical partnerships to enhance
cyber resilience.
The Forum reflects growing
efforts to strengthen Africa’s cybersecurity resilience through investment in
local expertise, institutional capacity and regional collaboration.
Through the partnership and
other stakeholder engagements, the Communications Authority of Kenya continues
to champion a secure, trusted and resilient digital ecosystem while advancing
Africa’s collective capacity to anticipate, prevent and respond to cyber
threats.
