The African Regional Satellite
Communications Organization (RASCOM) has announced the confirmation of Timothy
Adi Ashong as its substantive Director General. The confirmation took place
during the 74th Assembly of the RASCOM Board of Directors in Cameroon,
solidifying Ashong's leadership role in promoting satellite communications and
information technology services in Africa.
Mr. Ashong, a seasoned
professional with over 20 years of experience in satellite communications, has
been serving as Acting Director General prior to his confirmation. His
extensive background in networking, spectrum management, and satellite
regulations makes him an ideal candidate to lead RASCOM's efforts in bridging
the digital divide in the region.
As Director General, Timothy
Ashong will be responsible for implementing RASCOM's strategic plan,
strengthening partnerships, and driving innovation in satellite communications
to support Africa's digital transformation. His five-year term begins
immediately, and he will work closely with member states, partners, and
stakeholders to advance RASCOM's mission.
His experience in the
field is impressive, having served as Acting Managing Director and overseeing
telecommunications, direct TV broadcasting, and Internet access to underserved
rural areas across Africa. He holds a Master of Science in Communications
Management from New Buckinghamshire University and a Bachelor of Engineering in
Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering from All Nations University.
The newly appointed D-G leadership
roles extend beyond RASCOM, as he has been elected Vice Chairman of the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the satellite sector and serves
as chair of the satellite regulations committee of the Economic Community of
West African States (ECOWAS). He is also Vice Chair of the African Telecom
Union for the satellite regulation sector.
