A Task Force comprising
Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) stakeholders from across Africa has
commissioned the development of the next iteration of the Science, Technology,
and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034). The strategy aims to guide the
continent's STI development over the next decade.
The Task Force met at the
African Union (AU) headquarters on May 29-30, 2024, to provide a guiding
framework for the strategy, emphasizing inclusivity and relevance as core
principles. The Drafting Team has begun work on the STISA-2034 at the Regional
Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) premises in Nairobi,
with a deadline of September 2024 for completion.
The strategy is expected
to be validated and endorsed by the Ministers of STI in November 2024 and the
AU Summit in February 2025. STISA-2034 will build on the successes of its
predecessor, STISA-2024, and address emerging challenges and opportunities in
Africa's STI landscape.
This development marks a
significant milestone in Africa's quest to harness the power of science,
technology, and innovation to drive economic growth, sustainable development,
and global competitiveness. The inclusive and participatory approach adopted by
the Task Force ensures that the strategy will reflect the diverse needs and
aspirations of African countries, fostering a united approach to STI
development on the continent.
