The Minister for ICT
and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, has expressed the importance of an Open
Internet in driving digital development and inclusive growth in Africa.
Speaking at a workshop organized by the GIFI project on the sidelines of
ICANN80, Minister Ingabire stressed the need for open approaches to internet
policy, fostering innovation, creativity, and economic opportunities.
"The
Open Internet is a cornerstone of digital development, and we must work
together to ensure it remains a vibrant and inclusive space for all,"
Minister Ingabire said. "Africa has
the potential to leapfrog traditional development stages and harness the power
of the internet to drive economic growth and social progress."
The workshop, attended by
government representatives and stakeholders, explored case studies and
practical solutions for implementing Open Internet principles in Africa. Her address
set the tone for an engaging discussion, highlighting the opportunities and
challenges facing the continent.
"We
must prioritize digital literacy, online safety, and affordable access to
ensure that the benefits of the internet are shared equitably," she
said. "By working together, we can
create a digital future that is inclusive, innovative, and empowering for all
Africans."
The event showcased
Rwanda's commitment to digital transformation and its leadership in promoting
Open Internet principles in Africa.
