The United Nations Office
for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) has launched the first-ever UN Conference on
Sustainable Lunar Activities, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders
to discuss the future of lunar exploration and utilization.
The conference, which
kicked off on [date], has drawn global leaders, space agencies, astronauts,
NGOs, academia, and private sector representatives to discuss safe and
sustainable operations on the Moon. The event aims to facilitate communication
and information exchange among stakeholders, recognizing the Moon's
significance as a stepping stone for deeper space exploration, a hub for
scientific research, and a source of inspiration for humanity.

Holla-Maini emphasized that this conference marks the beginning of a multi-step
process, leading up to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space
(COPUOS) deliberations on the future course of action for lunar activities. The
possible establishment of an Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultations is
also on the agenda.
Holla-Maini expressed
UNOOSA's commitment to supporting Member States in developing concrete
solutions for peace, safety, and sustainability on the Moon. The organization
will convene additional informal exchanges, facilitate participation, and
enable informed decisions.
The conference is a significant
step towards ensuring the sustainable exploration and utilization of the Moon,
recognizing its importance for humanity's collective future.
