The
Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) recently hosted a training
forum for editors from various media houses, aimed at enhancing their
understanding of data protection laws. The event, organized in partnership with
the Media Council of Kenya, brought together industry experts to promote
awareness and compliance with the Data Protection Act.
Deputy
Data Commissioner Oscar Otieno, representing the Data Commissioner Immaculate
Kassait, praised the partnership between ODPC and the media, acknowledging
their crucial role in raising awareness about data protection. "This
training facilitates ongoing discussions on the Data Protection Act and
provides an opportunity for editors to learn about our technical processes in
regulating personal data processing in Kenya," he said.
Victor
Bwire, Director of Media Training and Development emphasized the importance of
prioritizing the relationship between ODPC and the media. He encouraged the
ODPC to empower the media's understanding of data protection, enabling them to
deliver informed reports and promote ethical journalism.
The
training forum aimed to create a data-conscious society, fostering public
trust, ethical journalism, and legal compliance in data processing. By
collaborating with media houses, ODPC seeks to ensure responsible handling of
personal data and promote a culture of data protection in Kenya's media
industry.
This
initiative demonstrates ODPC's commitment to engaging with stakeholders and
promoting awareness about data protection. By working together, ODPC and the
media can ensure that Kenyans' personal data is protected and used responsibly.
