A
new report by the GSMA, 'AI for Africa: Use cases delivering impact', has
revealed the vast potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive
socio-economic growth and climate action in Africa. While the continent
currently represents only 2.5% of the global AI market, emerging applications
could boost economic growth by $2.9 trillion by 2030.
The
report identifies over 90 AI use case applications in key markets like Kenya,
Nigeria, and South Africa, with agriculture, climate action, and energy being
the top sectors. AI-enabled solutions are improving farming practices, energy
access, and climate resilience, but challenges like limited data centers,
expensive technology investments, and digital skills gaps need to be addressed.
Mobile-enabled
edge computing offers a practical solution to overcome infrastructure barriers,
and smartphone penetration is expected to reach 88% by 2030. However, the
report highlights the need for stronger partnerships, policies, and training
programs to ensure Africa benefits from AI's transformative potential.
Max
Cuvellier Giacomelli, Head of Mobile for Development at the GSMA, stressed the
importance of collaboration and addressing ethical concerns to unlock AI's full
potential in Africa. The GSMA is committed to promoting innovation and
connectivity to drive positive change in the region.
