The Chief
Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) at MTN, Adwoa Wiafe has addressed
a gathering of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) on the importance of
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in their operations.
Speaking
to a total of 120 SMEs gathered at MTN House for a comprehensive training program
aimed at bolstering their capabilities and equipping them with essential tools
for success in today's dynamic business landscape, Adwoa Wiafe reiterated MTN's commitment to supporting SMEs, stating that they are "dear
to our hearts."
Defining
ESG as "protecting the environment, protecting society, and ensuring good
governance processes,” she noted that ESG is a collective responsibility,
requiring everyone's efforts to protect the environment, ensure social unity
and equality, and promote ethical business practices.
Madam
Wiafe cited examples of environmental challenges in Ghana, such as gallopsing which affects water usage and treatment, and called for the need for businesses
to consider the long-term effects of their operations on the environment and
society.
She also
outlined the company's initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint which include
transitioning to solar energy, investing in energy-efficient technologies, and
promoting digital solutions to reduce paper usage.
The
discussion also touched on MTN's social investments, particularly in the areas
of digital inclusion and community support.
