The
Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in collaboration with the
Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy and the Kenya
Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) has launched a quarterly training program aimed
at enhancing data protection compliance among private sector members.
The
training program, scheduled to run from August 12th to October 21st, 2024, was
officially launched by Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, alongside Mr.
Emmanuel Kimeu, Secretary of ICT, Security, and Audit, and Mr. Collins Ojiambo,
representative of KEPSA.
Speaking
during the launch, Commissioner Kassait noted the importance of compliance with
the Data Protection Act, encouraging sector members to register as data
controllers and processors. This registration will enable the ODPC to
effectively regulate data processing activities and minimize potential harm to
data subjects.
The
training program is designed to equip private sector members with the necessary
knowledge and skills to handle personal information in accordance with the Data
Protection Act. The program reflects the commitment of the ODPC to engage
various sectors on data protection issues, acknowledging the integral role of
personal information in business operations, particularly in the rapidly
advancing ICT sector.
By
safeguarding personal information and ensuring its use for intended purposes,
the program aims to promote a culture of data protection compliance among
private sector members.
