Senegal
has launched its inaugural satellite, Gaindesat-1A aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9
rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Developed in partnership
with the University Space Centre of Montpellier (CSUM), the earth observation
nanosatellite will play a crucial role in environmental monitoring, collecting
and transmitting valuable data to measuring stations across Senegal.
This
data will enhance water resource management, improve weather forecasts and
aviation safety, and support the monitoring and management of Senegal's lakes
and watercourses.
Following
the launch, the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye expressed
his pride and gratitude to the team behind the project, stating,
"Senegal is entering a new era today... This breakthrough marks a major
step towards our technological sovereignty." The successful launch is
the culmination of five years of hard work by Senegalese engineers and
technicians.
Initially
scheduled for launch in July 2024, the Gaindesat-1A project was first announced
in 2019 as part of Senegal's ambitious plan to build and launch its first
satellite within two years.
