Senegal's
Minister of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, Alioune
SALL, has met with Nick Clegg, Vice-President of Meta, to discuss strategic
investments in technological infrastructure, with a focus on artificial
intelligence (AI). This collaboration aims to establish the first sub-regional
computing center dedicated to AI in Senegal, accelerating innovation and
maximizing impact in vital sectors.
The partnership
is part of the New Deal for Technology, a visionary initiative seeking to
bridge the digital divide and propel Africa's economic growth. By harnessing
AI's potential, Senegal can leapfrog development challenges, enhance
productivity, and unlock new opportunities.
AI is expected
to bring numerous benefits to Senegal, including boosting productivity by
automating routine tasks, freeing resources for strategic planning and
innovation. AI-driven diagnostics and predictive analytics will also enhance
healthcare outcomes. Additionally, AI-powered learning platforms will
personalize education, increasing accessibility and effectiveness.
The proposed
computing center will provide a hub for AI research, development, and
application, fostering collaboration between local stakeholders, academia, and
industry experts. This initiative aligns with Meta's commitment to advancing AI
research and development, particularly in Africa.
However,
experts warn of a new "digital colonization" of Africa by foreign
companies feeding on African data without involving local actors. To mitigate
this risk, Senegal must ensure that its AI strategy prioritizes local ownership
and control.
