Smart Africa’s CEO,
Lacina Koné has addressed the High-level Meeting on Safeguarding the Physical
Backbone of Digital Futures in New York, calling attention to the crucial role
of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in bridging the digital divide. However, he
also emphasized the significant challenges posed by regulatory barriers and
affordability issues.
In his remarks,
Mr. Koné stressed that an inclusive digital revolution requires affordable
connectivity for all. "We cannot have an inclusive digital revolution
if the majority of our people are left behind because they simply cannot afford
to connect," he said.
He then urged
governments to play a critical role in creating supportive regulatory
environments, advocating for clear, harmonized, and forward-looking licensing
frameworks across countries.
The digital
divide remains a pressing concern, particularly in Africa, where many countries
struggle to provide accessible and affordable internet connectivity. According
to the Smart Africa CEO by addressing regulatory barriers, affordability
issues, and promoting digital literacy, Africa can unlock its digital future
and ensure an inclusive digital revolution for all.
