Kenya and Germany strengthen ties in renewable energy with a focus on sustainability

Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications, and The Digital Economy, Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has welcomed Dr. Robert Habeck, German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, along with his delegation, to the KenGen Olkaria Geothermal Spa. The visit is aimed at strengthening the partnership that exist between the two nations, a relationship built on shared values and a mutual commitment to sustainable development.

Over the years, Germany has provided vital support through funding, technical expertise, and innovative solutions, enabling Kenya to ascend as a global leader in renewable energy. Projects like the Olkaria Geothermal Complex stand as living monuments to this partnership, reflecting the alignment of both nations’ priorities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Kenya’s renewable energy sector is a cornerstone of its climate action strategy, driven by an acute awareness of the challenges posed by the global climate crisis. The nation has experienced prolonged droughts that strain hydrological energy systems and threaten food security, underscoring the urgency for sustainable energy solutions.

Currently, 93% of Kenya’s electricity comes from renewable sources, with geothermal energy leading the charge. It’s green energy sector offers significant opportunities for investment, with untapped potential in geothermal, wind, and solar energy projects. The establishment of Kenya’s Green Hydrogen Strategy and Guidelines positions the nation as a pioneer in this emerging technology, creating avenues for collaboration with international partners.

Dr. Ndung’u extended an invitation to Germany and other global partners to join Kenya in unlocking these opportunities. Through continued collaboration, both nations can achieve their energy goals while contributing to global energy security, economic resilience, and sustainable development.
