Kenya launches Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI, Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub

The Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy, Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has led a team of distinguished leaders at Konza Technopolis for the launch of two transformative initiatives. Presided over by His Excellency President Dr. William Ruto, the event marked the official unveiling of the Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub.

The launch brought together notable leaders, including H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Jr., Governor of Makueni; H.E. Joseph Ole Lenku, Governor of Kajiado County; Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua; UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Anthony Ngororano; UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Stephen Jackson; and H.E. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Guardian of the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub and former Vice President of Nigeria.

The Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence is set to position Kenya as a hub for groundbreaking advancements in AI, offering solutions tailored to Africa’s unique challenges. By driving research, fostering collaborations, and nurturing talent, the Centre aims to empower industries, governments, and communities to harness the power of digital technologies to accelerate development.

Speaking at the event, President Ruto reiterated the importance of embracing cutting-edge technologies to unlock Africa’s potential. "The Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence will not only position Kenya as a leader in AI but also create solutions that address the continent's needs," he stated.

The Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub, an initiative supported by UNDP and other global partners, is designed to revolutionize Africa’s approach to climate resilience, renewable energy, and green innovation. The hub will serve as a catalyst for investment in environmentally sustainable technologies, fostering a new generation of startups focused on green solutions.

H.E. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo highlighted the transformative potential of the hub, saying, "This is more than just a project; it’s a movement that will empower African entrepreneurs, create green jobs, and position the continent as a global leader in sustainable innovation."
