The
Agence sénégalaise d'études spatiales (ASES) has successfully hosted a landmark
workshop in collaboration with the Regional African Satellite Communications
Organization (RASCOM). The event, held at the ASES headquarters in Dakar,
centered on the theme "Satellite Communication: A Lever for Africa's
Development." It marked a significant milestone in fostering regional
cooperation and advancing satellite telecommunications and space technologies
to support sustainable development in Africa.
This
workshop was part of the strategic framework established by the Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) signed between ASES and RASCOM on October 24, 2023. The MoU
aims to enhance regional collaboration in satellite technology and strengthen
Africa's telecommunications infrastructure, aligning with Senegal's Vision 2050
framework and the New Technological Deal.
The
event brought together prominent international experts and key stakeholders.
Among them were Timothy Ashong, Managing Director of RASCOM; Temidayo Oniosun,
Director and Founder of Space in Africa; Dr. Divine S. Anye, Founder of
InfosPro Solution LLC; and Dr. Raymond Sabugu-Sumah, Deputy Director of the
National Communications Authority. Senegalese institutions and
telecommunications entities were also represented, including the Ministère de
la Communication, des Télécommunications et du Numérique, ARTP Sénégal,
SONATEL, SatNav Africa JPO, and several leading academic institutions.
Chaired
by Maram Kaire, Director General of ASES, the workshop featured dynamic
discussions on the role of satellite communication in bridging Africa's digital
divide, enhancing connectivity, and creating opportunities for socio-economic
transformation. Participants explored innovative solutions to address
challenges in education, healthcare, and agriculture, emphasizing the
importance of space-driven technologies in achieving sustainable development.
In
his opening remarks, Mr. Kaire underscored the critical role of satellite
communications in shaping Africa's future, calling for continued collaboration
among stakeholders to unlock the full potential of space technology. He
highlighted the alignment of ASES’s initiatives with national and continental
development objectives, reinforcing Senegal's commitment to leading in Africa's
technological advancement.
The
workshop concluded with a collective pledge to deepen cooperation and expand
the use of satellite technology for Africa’s growth. ASES expressed gratitude
to all participants and partners for their valuable contributions, reaffirming
its dedication to driving innovation and collaboration within the African space
and telecommunications ecosystem.
