The
Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, has
emphasized the urgent need for the establishment of an Online Consumer Affairs
Committee to safeguard the rights of digital consumers. Speaking at the
Electronic Information System Management Advisory Council (EISMAC) retreat in
Windhoek, she underscored the importance of consumer protection in an
increasingly digital economy.
Addressing
the newly appointed members of EISMAC, Theofelus urged them to ensure that
their work yields tangible benefits for all Namibians, improving their daily
interactions with digital platforms and electronic transactions. With the rapid
expansion of e-commerce, online services, and digital financial transactions,
the minister highlighted the necessity of proactive measures to address
consumer concerns such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and fair digital trade
practices.
EISMAC,
which has now been officially appointed, inaugurated, and gazetted, plays a
critical role in overseeing and implementing Namibia’s Electronic Transactions
Act of 2019. The council has been tasked with exercising its powers and
fulfilling its mandate to enhance the country’s digital regulatory environment,
ensuring that electronic transactions are secure, efficient, and accessible to
all.
The
minister’s remarks reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening
Namibia’s digital landscape, ensuring that consumers are protected while
fostering innovation and digital transformation.
